Sleeping
Grebe Guest Suite “Rustic Luxury in Paradise” Grand Marais,
Michigan
Poet, novelist, screenwriter and rugged-individualist
Jim Harrison never slept here, but he drank (and occasionally
still drinks) just a short block away at the Lake Superior
Brewing Company (Dunes Saloon).
Welcome to Sleeping Grebe Guest Suite (SGGS), as comfortable,
cozy and relaxing as the name implies. Located in the
Campbell Street Gallery building, just two blocks west
of the white sand beaches of Grand Marais Harbor, two
blocks south of the agate beaches of Lake Superior and
one block from the heart of downtown. Combining natural
beauty, history, fine art and local color, this is a great
starting point for exploring Grand Marais and the Upper
Peninsula. The Suite features two bedrooms (one queen
and two twin beds), kitchen, living room and private bath.
The renovated historic 1883 building was originally a
lumber company office and hotel. As a tribute to the old
growth White Pine forests, which once blanketed the region,
wooden exposed walls in the bedrooms show massive boards.
The kitchen/living room features a piano bar, where you
can sip cool drinks and share conversation as gourmet
meals are prepared. The Suite evokes a feeling of yesteryear
and simpler times.
Rates: $495 per week (Sat.to Sat.) for up to four people,
plus tax. $125 per night (three-night minimum), plus tax.
Call for additional rates. No smoking, pet friendly. Sleeps
four comfortably. Open June-Oct. No TV or phone, however,
most mobile phones work well. Campbell Street Gallery
is available for special events, wedding receptions, reunions
and meetings. When combined with the SGGS, it makes for
a great place to house guests, prepare food and hold small
celebrations.

Grebe /’grebe/ n: any of a family of swimming and diving
birds closely related to the loons but having lobate toes.
That’s right, lobate toes. Look it up.
